Doubles as a frisbee, if you're a giant. Free from the contraints of an atmosphere, engineers started using brand new shapes for their space shuttles. Over time, imperceptibly, the designs became flatter, and more cylindrical. At some point it became impossible to deny: they were building flying saucers. It was a big thing in the press for a while, and then people admitted that this was, after all, the most practical design.
